I have come to love waterfowl hunting. Contrasted with deer hunting, which focuses on stealth, silence, scent control, and long periods of waiting, waterfowl hunting is much more fun. I love deer hunting; its rewards are certainly more sublime and hard-fought. In the blind, though, you can joke with your friends, pet the dog, drink coffee, and move around. The shots are faster and more frequent.
I love seeing the big flights that come early in the morning, before the sun rises and brings shooting hours. The sound of hundreds of wings cutting into the wind is incredible. I have spent years backpacking, climbing, and mountaineering. I find that I experience nature as much in a morning’s hunt as in those activities. I hope the future brings more days like the one pictured.
